Help Customers Feel Guilt-Free Passion for Pork Tenderloin with AHA Certification

Tender and delicious pork tenderloin can now claim another benefit: it’s officially “heart healthy”, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). The recent certification by the AHA means that pork tenderloin meets AHA nutritional criteria for extra leanness and can bear the “Heart-Check” mark. See the AHA Heart-Check Program Nutritional Guidelines.

This heart-check symbol is a signal to your customers that pork tenderloin is a heart healthy food that they can feel good about serving to their families.

Pork tenderloin also means strong sales opportunities for you: in the first six months of 2011, dollar sales of tenderloin increased by 9% while pound sales increased by 2%. Combine these figures with a 7% increase in average retail price and you have a product that your customers are committed to purchasing1. Give them an additional reason to love pork tenderloin by using the AHA endorsement.

Here are basic guidelines for implementing the AHA Certification in your meat case:

Generic Use: The AHA Heart-Check “Extra Lean” mark can be used free of charge on signage, on-pack labels and advertising that does not include your logo or branded product. You must receive approval from the American Heart Association to use the "Extra Lean" heart-check mark.

Retailer-Specific Use: To use the AHA Heart-Check “Extra Lean” mark in conjunction with your logo, you must receive approval from the American Heart Association and pay a $1,000 fee.

Please contact your National Pork Board Retail Marketing Manager for details regarding the application process for both generic and retailer-specific use of the AHA heart-check mark.

Overview of Application Process

1. Promotion Review Form - review basic guidelines for use of heart-check marks
2. Certification Mark License Agreement - agree to heart-check mark license terms
3. Company Application Form - provide company contact information
4. New Product Submittal Form - provide UPC codes for product on which mark will appear
5. POS and Advertising Materials - submit samples of POS and advertising that will be used at retail locations

After your application has been approved, you will receive AHA Graphic Standards and images of the heart-check mark. Using the AHA heart-check mark without prior approval will jeopardize the continuation of the AHA Certification program.
